Just in. Churlish Governor Greg Abbott of Texas and his Attorney General have now banned abortion claiming that it is “Elective Surgery” and therefore not medically necessary.
This is the new mantra that anti-abortion legislators are using to try to ban abortion outright in their states.
From Yahoo:
According to the Attorney General's office, "any type of abortion that is not medically necessary to preserve the life or health of the mother" must be suspended. Those in violation will face "penalties of up to $1,000 or 180 days of jail time.
Ohio attempted the same last week, but abortion clinics in Ohio have refused to stop providing care. An interesting component here is that most of the court systems are shut down, so I don’t know how that will play out if there are legal challenges.
Abortion is NOT elective medically. It is elective based on the wishes of the woman. She can elect to have an abortion or have the baby. Abortion is always medically necessary if the woman so chooses.
